Day Trip to Cotopaxi from Quito – Ecuador’s Iconic Volcano

Itinerary:

🕕 7:00 a.m. – Pick-up from your hotel in Quito and drive to Cotopaxi National Park (approx. 1 hour 45 minutes).


1. Mariscal Sucre Interpretation Center

🕘 9:00 a.m. – Arrival and check-in at the park.
📍 Learn about the geology, flora, fauna, and cultural history of the Cotopaxi area.
⏱ Time: 20–30 minutes


2. Limpiopungo Lagoon (3,800 m / 12,467 ft)

🕤 9:45 a.m. – Scenic walk around this glacial lagoon surrounded by Andean landscapes.
📍 Great place to spot birds such as Andean gulls, caracaras, and wild horses.
⏱ Easy walk: 1 hour (approx. 1.3 km / 0.8 miles)
💡 Ideal for acclimatizing to high altitude.


3. Hike to José Rivas Refuge (4,864 m / 15,953 ft)

🕚 11:30 a.m. – Drive to the parking lot at 4,600 meters and begin the hike.
📍 Steep hike on volcanic gravel terrain to reach the refuge.
⏱ Ascent: 45 minutes to 1 hour / Descent: 30 minutes
🧭 Optional short hike to the glacier (weather permitting): additional 1 hour.


4. Lunch

🕑 2:00 p.m. – Lunch time outside of the park visiting a local restaurant (optional, not included).


5. Return to Quito

🕒 3:00 p.m. – Drive back to Quito.
🕔 5:00 p.m. – Estimated arrival.

What to Bring on a Cotopaxi Tour
